7. What is Accelerated Reader?

A reading program from the Renaissance Learning Corporation, Accelerated Reader has been used at Southwest High School since the early 2000s. It is done schoolwide and we adopted as part of our School Improvement Program.Since that time, students are required to earn a certain number words by reading books and taking computer-based quizzes.

At the beginning of the year all students are tested using STAR Reader software, also from Renaissance.  This shows the student her Zone of Proximal Development.  The ZPD shows the student what range he must read in order to advance with his reading. The Accelerated Reader Program also sets goals, based on research, for each student. Each student may select any book for which we have a quiz, read it, keep a log, and test on it when he finishes reading.  Make sure that your student is reading in her Zone of Proximal Development.

The AR goal is worth 10% of your student’s grade each quarter.

To meet that goal each student should read 20-30 minutes a day in a book that they select.  Part of that reading is accomplished each day during the 23 minutes of SSR or Sustained Silent Reading.  SSR takes place at the beginning of 2nd Period.  Each student is required to have a book of his own choosing to read during this time.  Students are not allowed to sleep or do homework during this time.

8. Testing Procedures

Some teachers require their students to test on the computers in their classroom.  Some send them to the Media Center to test.  Here in the Media Center a student needs the following to take a test:

A. A school-issued picture I.D.

B. An AR reading log signed by your teacher

C. A pass from a teacher if it is during class time.

D. During testing students may not use notes, talk with other people, or surf the Internet

We test before and after school, during classes (with a pass), and during both lunches.  We do not test during SSR or between classes.

9. Misconduct

Any student caught taking a test that is not his or hers or cheating in any way will have that test’s score recorded as a zero and receive a referral.
